Casino Interests Line Politicians Coffers
06.25.09 |
Candidates and political committees in Pennsylvania received more than four-point-three-million dollars in contributions over the last seven years from the casino industry. A study by Common Cause of Pennsylvania said contributors included those with an ownership stake in one or more of the state's 14 approved casinos. Slot-machine makers and the horse-racing industry also kicked in. Barry Kauffman, the executive director of Common Cause, said the gaming industry has been on a winning streak as a result. The top recipient was Governor Ed Rendell, who received more than one-million dollars from casino interests between 2001 and 2008. That was about double the amount donated to former State Senator Vincent J. Fumo.
