Campbell Ny To Prep For Man Camps

03.09.12 | Sarah Harnisch

The town of Campbell is dealing with "man camps"-- camps of male gas drilling workers that are purposely put up to ease the strain on hotels because of the Marcellus Shale drilling boom. The "Corning Leader" reports on Monday, the town is expected to take a vote to enact a two-year moratorium on establishing or expanding dormatories, campgrounds, r.v. parks, or trailer parks. They say they haven't had a problem yet in Campbell, but they want to get ahead of it before drilling is approved in New York. In nearby Athens Township, a "man camp" opened as a dorm-like facility to ease the housing shortage. Campbell says the camp is run well, but they want the city to hold the reigns on how to deal with extra gas workers not each individual campground and trailer park.
