California Schools Required To Teach History Of Homosexuals

07.15.11 | Sarah Harnisch

California's governor signed a law into effect yesterday that requires every public school to teach the history of gays and lesbians. Republican Senator Sharon Rudder says it's a mistake, and not just because of content. "Colleges and universities are not testing for students' understanding of the personal lives of inventors or historical figures," she says. "They're testing the students' knowledge of math, reading, writing, and science. These are subjects that schools should be teaching our students -- subjects that will help them succeed in the future."

The law takes effect this fall.
