C Everett Koop Goes Home

C. Everett Koop, America's rock star Surgeon General, passed away at his home Monday at the age of 96. The cause of death has not been released. The nation's 'Top Doc' served as Surgeon General for eight years during the Reagan administration, a 6-foot-1 Evangelical Presbyterian who frequently donned a bow tie and suspenders, and was jeered at for praying at the bedsides of each of his patients.

Koop was staunchly pro-life, telling new medical students that performing abortions was against their Hippocratic oath. He attended Cornell and the University of Pennsylvania. He was one of the first to specialize in pediatric surgery, and was a pioneer against smoking and the aids virus.
