American businesses are following the lead of individuals abandoning landline phones to save money. Many Americans have looked at their traditional home phone bill and their cell phone bill and wondered why they needed both.

One in six households have opted either for the cell phone only or, if they keep a home phone, they're using a high speed Internet connection rather than a wire provided by the phone company.

"USA Today" reports offices nationwide are following that lead as are colleges.  Forrester Research, a Massachusetts consulting firm has statistics showing about 25-percent of businesses are phasing out desk phones.

In-Stat, a marketing firm in Scottsdale, Arizona says more than eight-percent of employees nationwide who travel frequently have cell phones only.
