Annual Hurricane Season Starts Today

06.01.10 |

Hurricane season starts today and if the weather experts are right, it's going to be a long six months. The federal government's outlook calls for as many as eight major hurricanes and another 15 named storm systems forming in the Atlantic. Emergency responders are also paying close attention to Haiti where more than a million people are still homeless because of January's earthquake, making them particularly vulnerable if a big storm comes their way. Meanwhile, the growing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico creates its own challenges. Storm surge from a landfalling major hurricane could push spilled oil inland for miles despite all of the protective boom that deployed along the coast.
