American Pleads Guilty To Trying To Spy For China

(Alexandria, VA) -- A Detroit man pleaded guilty today to trying to get hired by the CIA so he could spy for China. Through a plea agreement, Glenn Shriver admitted he conspired to communicate national defense information. The agreement calls for Shriver to spend two years in prison.
The 28-year-old acknowledged in a Virginia federal courtroom that he met with Chinese officials about 20 times beginning in 2004. He also said Chinese intelligence officers paid him about 70-thousand dollars.
Prosecutors cited continued efforts by foreign governments to convince Americans to spy on their own country and said the U.S. will remain vigilant against national security threats. U.S.-China relations have been tense due to concerns over trade ties and claims that China is undervaluing its yuan currency.
