Airplane Layaway

One air carrier is offering something no other airline has done: airfare layaway. Continental Airlines says passengers will be allowed to lock-in a fare for up to a week, but a fee will be attached.  They would be able to cancel without a penalty.  A three-day option will cost five dollars, while the option for seven days will cost nine bucks.  It's called the farelock service, and it's the first time an air carrier in the Continental U.S. has offered it. It's been available in Europe for some time. The service was just offered for the first time on Monday.
