Airbus Receives Record Plane Order From Emirates

A record eleven-billion-dollar order has been received by Airbus from largest airline in the Arab world. Dubai based Emirates has ordered 32 double-decker A380s, bringing the total number of aircraft they have requested from Airbus to 90. All of the planes are expected to be delivered by 2017. The airplane manufacturer says the Emirates order is the largest-ever commercial aircraft order by dollar value. In addition to the plane orders from Emirates, Airbus has sold almost three-billion-dollars in narrow-body A320s and wide-body A350s to Brazil's largest air carrier, TAM.

While Airbus is reveling in the Emirates request, some analysts are downplaying the order. They contend it is a bargaining chip for the airline as it moves to secure more landing slots in Berlin. One analyst says it is possible some of the orders may not be filled. However, there are other aerospace insiders who believe the order from Emirates is the real thing, and exemplifies the Middle East as leading the way in the recovery of the airline industry from the global recession.
