Mount Redoubt before its eruption - March 21, 2009

Alaska's Mount Redoubt has erupted. The U.S. Geological Survey says the ten-thousand-plus-foot volcano began erupting just after 11:30 local time Sunday night. As a result, ashfall and mudflows are a possibility in the immediate vicinity.

Redoubt lies about 100 miles southwest of Anchorage. Its last major eruption was back in December of 1989. There have been no reports so far of damage or injuries caused by this latest eruption.
