It's time for the 2009 Little League World Series. This year's 63rd competition will begin today and last through Sunday, August 30th, when the world championship will be played. A total of 16 teams will compete, with eight from the U.S. and eight others from around the world.
Games will be played in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The first game today will feature Mercer Island of Washington state playing against Staten Island of New York. The second contest will be Chinese Taipei versus Germany.
A crowd estimated at 40,000 people crammed the streets of Williamsport Thursday evening as people from all over the world mixed among the throngs along the streets for the multi-national parade that set up the 63rd annual event.
Grand Marshal Jim Rice, a former Boston Red Sox baseball player led the procession and hometown former Little Leaguer and New York Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina made a special guest appearance as well. Mussina is a native of Montoursville.
