11.06.09 |
Thirteen people were killed in a bloody shooting allegedly carried out by a soldier at Fort Hood, Texas. 30 more people were wounded. Lieutenant General Bob Cone told reporters the shooter opened fire at a soldier readiness facility, which provides last-minute checkups for soldiers who are about to deploy. That shooter, Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, is an Army psychiatrist who had previously been stationed at the Walter Reed Army hospital. Hasan is believed to have used a pair of handguns in the crime. Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison said she has heard he was about to deploy to Iraq.
President Obama condemned the shooting rampage as a "horrific outburst of violence." He added that it's terrible that soldiers preparing for action should face such danger on an Army post on American soil. He expressed his prayers for Fort Hood troops and their families.
Fort Hood is situated between Austin and Dallas and is the largest active duty armored post in the U.S. It supports two armored divisions, the 1st Cavalry Division and the 4th Infantry Division. Fort Hood is also home of the Headquarters Command Third Corps and numerous other units and organizations.
