12 Orphaned Amish Kids Adopted In Steuben County

The tragic story began last summer when 6 Amish men and women were killed by a drunk driver, affecting 70 children. Yesterday, an Amish aunt and uncle who last fall sold their Ohio home and moved to Jasper to care for 12 of those kids officially adopted them in a quiet, 7-minute hearing at the Steuben county courthouse. The children, ages 1 to 19, were asked if they were ready to create a new family, and each confidently answered "yes." The drunk driver from that crash, Steven Eldridge, was sentenced to 24 years in state prison back in March.
