The apostle Paul writes of the importance of showing love with discernment.

Philippians 1:9-10  [Paul said] I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding.  For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ's return.  (NLT)

When a person becomes a Christ-follower they don't need a big laundry list of things they need to do.  The initial direction for someone newly "born" into the family of God is to share the unconditional love they have experienced! People everywhere are needy for things like a phone-call, a plate of cookies, a hot meal, or even volunteering at your local church.

While showing love is always commendable . . . showing love in targeted ways is better!  Our verses call for love with knowledge and understanding (discernment).  So, maybe helping an elderly neighbor get to the doctor is of more help than baking them cookies?  Some folks are sponges for love . . . the road is always one-way.  Perhaps not everyone who knocks on the door of a local church should be handed a check; maybe taking them out to eat and coaching them on job interview techniques and resume' preparation is what they really need?
