The apostle Matthew describes the character of God in response to prayer.

Matthew 7:11  If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask?  (NIV)

This verse comes at the end of a prayer section in Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.  Previously, Jesus had said, "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find."  Is Jesus then some kind of a divine vending machine or a genie offering wishes?  No, you find clarity on this in Jesus' earlier statements where He asked, if a son asks for bread will you give him a stone?  If he asks for fish will you give him a snake?  The answer is obvious.  No!  A loving father gives good things to his son. not things that are useless or destructive.  This should be a motivation to boldly come and pray for good things from our loving heavenly Father and watch Him provide.

If you are in a difficult situation and God has not acted, what then??  Tony Evans says remember in the Bible where it says, "And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose."  (Romans 8)  Jesus promised that to follow Him would result in tribulation -- but the result of trusting and leaning on God to get through the trial will result in "good".  Evans says if you don't know if what you are praying for is "good" or not -- in James 1 it says, if you lack wisdom, ask God for it and He will give it generously.
