From His Sermon on the Mount:  Jesus' warns against careless speech.

Matthew 12:36  [Jesus said] But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgement.  (NKJV)

This verse is one of many in the Bible that says God is listening . . . and will judge you on the basis of what you say.  And, it's not just four letter words, mean-spirited words, gossip or slander -- God will judge you for idle or careless words!  So, what constitutes an "idle" word?

John MacArthur writes that the basic meaning of "idle" or "careless" is:  "useless, barren, unproductive, or otherwise worthless.  Such words include those that are flippant, irresponsible, or in any way inappropriate."  So, thinking before you speak should be our habit . . . making sure that all speech is actively good; something you wouldn't be embarrassed to say before a holy God.
