The apostle John records Jesus' promise that trusting Him would provide a peace not based on circumstances, but on the presence of His Spirit.

John 16:33 [Jesus said] These things I have spoken to you that in Me you may have peace.  In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.  (NKJV)

Jesus was minutes away from arrest by the religious leaders of the day.  It would set into motion a series of humiliating, agonizing, unjust events that would culminate in the crucifixion.  The disciples were anxious too!  Jesus wanted the disciples to know that understanding why He had to go, was not the most important thing.  The most important thing was for them to look to the Heavenly Father for strength and joy and peace -- just as He had!

The Holy Spirit was being sent to strengthen the disciples, so they could deal with the trials that lay before them.  Because they trusted and believed in Christ, one day they would be with Him forever with joy everlasting.  Ray Stedman wrote, "In the world you are going to have nothing but trouble -- trouble at work, trouble at school, trouble at home . . . because that is the way this world is.  But [Jesus said] "Be of good cheer.  I am in control of the world.  I have overcome the world."
