Old Testament King Solomon prays for wisdom to lead his people.
I Kings 3:9 [Solomon prayed] “So give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people to discern between good and evil.” (NASB)
This is a remarkable moment in the Bible. King Solomon has just begun his reign, and gathers the people, making a thousand burnt offerings to God, seeking His guidance. How it must have pleased the Almighty to have this young king humble himself. Then God appears to Solomon in a dream and told him to ask for whatever he wanted! What would you say??
It's a testament to Solomon's devotion and submission to God that his request was for wisdom to lead Israel. Solomon felt keenly his inadequacies in taking his father's throne; when you are honest about your weaknesses, God is only too glad to provide the strength needed to accomplish His will. (Philippians 4:13) God never gives His children just what we ask -- He always gives more!
