The apostle John writes that God is the originator of love.

1 John 4:10  This is real love -- not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.  (NLT)

It has been said that if you survey the pantheon of deities, no god but the God of the Bible  loves and is loved by His followers.  So, it would seem God's love is the standard by which we love others.  Consider this:  the God of the Bible does not love humanity because Christ died for mankind -- God's love preceded man and his sin!

One commentator writes:  "[God's love] is independent of, and earlier than [our love] . . . Not only that, but God's love is a love that gives His best!"  In this verse, the apostle records that God loved us and sent . . . His Son.  John magnifies the same thought in his gospel where he wrote:  "God so loved the world that He gave His only . . . Son".  God's greatest expression of love to the world was through the sacrifice of His Son -- for you and me!
