World's Tallest Tower Opens Monday In Dubai
01.04.10 |
The world's tallest tower opens Monday in Dubai. The Burj Dubai took five years and more than a billion dollars to build. At 26-hundred-and-25 feet and 160-plus stories, the combination hotel, apartment and office tower is taller than the world's current leader, the Taipei 101 in Taiwan. That building will now look puny at one-thousand-667 feet.
But the occupancy rate at Burj Dubai, which simply means "Dubai Tower" in Arabic, will only reach up to about 75-percent this year. The sheikdom remains in a recession as real estate prices slumped by half in the past year. Analysts say that while 90-percent of the apartments in Burj Dubai have been sold, office space has been a tough sell. Monday's festivities will include the grand opening of an observation deck on the 124th floor, and of course a fireworks display.
