World War II Museum To Be Dedicated Today

A museum honoring "The Greatest Generation" will be dedicated today in New Orleans. Tom Hanks and NBC newsman Tom Brokaw will lead ceremonies dedicating the 70-thousand square-foot building that honors those who served during World War II. Among the guests of honor will be 350 veterans of the war, who will proceed to the ceremony on a red carpet from the museum's original home.
The new building, made of pre-cast concrete, glass and 30-gauge steel, is the first structure to rise on a six-acre tract in the New Orleans Warehouse District, across from the nine-year-old museum's original building. The yet-to-be-named museum's 300-million-dollar expansion is scheduled to be complete by 2015 with the addition of three more structures. Gordon "Nick" Mueller, the museum's president and chief executive officer, said the planners never dreamed of something so large when they opened on June 6, 2000. He said he founded the museum along with New Orleans historian Stephen Ambrose, who wrote extensively about World War II. Ambrose died in 2002.
