West Bank Violence Hangs Over Mideast Peace Summit

(Washington, DC) -- Kicking off a two-day Middle East peace summit, President Obama condemned what he called a "senseless slaughter" near Hebron this week. After a White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Obama said the U.S. will remain unwavering in support of Israel's security. He warned that extremists will continue efforts to undermine the renewed peace efforts. Hamas has taken responsibility for the deaths of four Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank.
Netanyahu also condemned the attacks, calling them brutal and savage. The Israeli leader said the perpetrators have no respect for human life or human rights. At the urging of the U.S., the Israelis and Palestinians agreed to resume direct talks for the first time in a couple of years. Obama said the U.S. remains committed to a two-state solution in the volatile region, allowing Israel and the Palestinians to live side-by-side in peace and security.
