The Rochester-based grocery giant has been accused of violating the Fair Credit Reporting Act for failing to give job applicants and employees who became the subjects of consumer background checks proper notice.

The civil lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court by two employees from Rochester and Ithaca. They are acting on behalf of all job applicants and workers nationwide for Wegmans saying Wegmans uses the services of a third party to routinely obtain information on consumer reports to evaluate prospective and current employees.

Wegmans responded saying they are confident that their process for screening and background checks is fully compliant with federal law.
