Voter Set To Decide Between Brown And Coakley

Voters in Massachusetts will choose a successor today to the late Senator Edward Kennedy who held the seat for 47 years. Republican state Senator Scott Brown has been surging late in the campaign with some polls showing him either in a dead heat or leading in the race against Democratic Attorney General Martha Coakley who once held a double-digit lead. Massachusetts has not elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate since 1972. The high level intensity that has marked the campaign for the last several weeks is expected to continue today as the candidates barnstorm across the state in search of votes. State election officials anticipate as many as two-point-two-million of the state's four-million registered voters will cast a ballot in today's special election. More than 100-thousand residents have applied for absentee ballots. Also on the ballot is independent Joseph Kennedy, who is not related to the late Senator Kennedy.
