Verizon Settles "Mystery Fee" Probe With Record Payout

(Washington, DC) -- Verizon Wireless has agreed to the largest settlement payout in the Federal Communications Commission's history to clear up a controversy over so-called "mystery fees." Verizon will pay 25-million dollars to the FCC after a probe found the wireless communications giant charged customers surprise "pay-as-you-go" data fees of a $1.99 each over the past three years.
The settlement is on top of at least 52-million dollars Verizon has already agree to pay some 15-million cell phone customers who were mistakenly charged for mobile Internet use. The FCC settlement calls for Verizon to create a Data Charge Task Force to handle future complaints.
Verizon released a statement apologizing to customers for the erroneous data charges. The wireless carrier also said the payment was voluntary, which means it will avoid an FCC fine and an official finding of wrongdoing.
