U.S. House Race in New York Close

A special congressional election in New York state has less than 100 votes separating the candidates and is described as too close to call. It is being reported by local media that Democrat Scott Murphy holds the slight lead over Republican State Assembly Minority Leader Jim Tedisco in the mostly rural northeastern House district.
Many politically knowledgeable people believe the election is a referendum on how President Obama is tackling the economy. The winner takes over the House seat that Democratic Representative Kirsten Gillibrand left when she replaced Hillary Clinton in the Senate.
Reports by CBS, ABC and NBC indicate that 154-thousand voters showed up at the polls and that about 99 percent of the ballots cast have been tallied. Some ten-thousand absentee ballots are expected to play a significant role in deciding the outcome. No absentee ballots have been counted and they can be received until April 13th.
