Two-time World Cup veteran Landon Donovan will lead the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team to South Africa for this year's installment of the international competition. The 23-man final roster was unveiled Wednesday. The defending MLS MVP is the the all-time leader in scoring and assists for the U.S. Fellow midfielder DaMarcus Beasley and defender Steve Cherundolo are the other player returning to the World Cup roster for a third time. The team will be captained by defender Carlos Bocanegra. Tim Howard, Marcus Hahnemann and Brad Guzan were named the goalies for coach Bob Bradley's squad. Howard and Hahnemann are on the World Cup roster for the second time each, while Guzan is a World Cup rookie. Coach Bradley's son Michael will also be making his first trip to the World Cup.
The U.S. hopes to rebound from a poor showing in the World Cup four years ago in Germany. In 2006, the team failed to advance out of group play and into the knock-out rounds. This year's tournament starts on June 11th and will last for a month. The title game will be July 11th in Johannesburg. Team USA's first game will be June 12th against England. They will also face Slovenia and Algeria in group play.
