United Airlines Announces Job Cuts

United Airlines announced Monday it'll be laying off 600 flight attendants. The Chicago-based carrier will eliminate the positions by August 31st. That's in addition to more than 15-hundred positions it already promised to cut from a workforce of 13-thousand-500 flight attendants. The airline will seek volunteers to take furloughs before laying anyone off. United also plans to ground 100 aircraft, or more than one of every five planes in its fleet.
Other U.S. carriers have also announced cutbacks recently over a drop in revenue as fewer people travel. American Airlines is cutting 12-hundred flight attendents by October 1st and US Airways is eliminating 400 through voluntary furloughs. Southwest Airlines is offering buyouts through this Friday. The Air Transport Association says passenger revenue plummeted 26-percent in May from the same period last year. The number of people traveling on U.S. carriers dropped nine-and-a-half percent for the month. The dip occurred even as the price of flying one mile fell nearly 18-percent during the same period.
