Unemployment Rate Hits 8.9%

The national unemployment rate is at a 25-year high. New figures from the Labor Department show the jobless rate was eight-point-nine percent in April, a jump of nearly half a percent in a single month. That means there are 13.7 million people without jobs in America. It is the highest reading since September of 1983.
The news is not all bad. While employers cut about 540,000 jobs last month, that number is than what was expected, and it is the smallest amount of jobs cut since October.
Almost all job sectors saw losses. Only the government, education, and health services sectors saw added jobs. Unemployment rates rose among adult men and blacks that month.
