UN: Disease Could Kill Millions In Flood-Ravaged Pakistan
08.17.10 |
(Islamabad) -- International agencies are predicting a "second wave" of deaths as a result of the devastating floods in Pakistan. The United Nations says up to three-and-a-half-million more children could die from diseases spread by insects and contaminated water. In a statement issued in New York, the world body said acute watery diarrhea and dysentery pose the greatest threat, but there is also a significant risk from hepatitis A, hepatitis E and typhoid fever.
Already, the UN has confirmed the first case of cholera in Pakistan. So far, up to 16-hundred people have been killed and another two-million have lost their homes in the worst flooding to hit Pakistan in decades.
