Two Massive Health Networks To Track The Sick In P.A. Marcellus Territory

Two powerful healthcare networks in Pennsylvania are conducting the first systematic study of the health effects of Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling. Guthrie Health, based in Sayre, Pennsylvania and the Geisinger Health System, based out of Danville, Pennsylvania have joined together. They say they will develop a massive health surveillance network to make patient data available for research purposes. They will track people living in the drilling zones that suffer from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. They also want to look at whether or not air pollutants associated with gas drilling are affecting more people with asthma and other lung problems. Preliminary results will be released within a year, but other aspects of their research will be released slowly, over the next 5 to 15 years.
