An embattled education aide to Republican Governor Tom Corbett resigned on Tuesday. Former Education Secretary Ron Tomalis, who remained on the payroll for 15 months at the same $139,000-a-year salary, will leave his post on August 26th.  Corbett's challenger in the November gubernatorial election, Democratic nominee Tom Wolf, has called Tomalis' employment a “scandal,” questioning the lack of documentation for his work as Corbett's higher education advisor. Records show Tomalis sent five emails during the past year and made about one phone call a day. Corbett's aides have defended Tomalis' work.
