The Roaring Spring, PA chicken ban

12.11.13 | Bob Price

In Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania, you've got to lose the birds, but you can keep the bees. The Altoona suburb has voted to curtail in-town agriculture while carving out legal exceptions for gardeners and beekeepers.  The borough council has ruled urban chicken ownership is illegal.  In fact, any kind of agriculture on lots smaller than 5 acres is now barred in Roaring Spring.  Critics call the edict, draconian. The town says changing times dictate clear restrictions on farm animals in the densely populated town.
