Tennessee Lawsuit Could Threaten Christians In Public Schools

The ACLU has filed a lawsuit against an entire county of public schools in Tennessee, saying they are "public schools, not Sunday schools." The lawsuit could have profound effects on what forms of Christianity are allowed in the public school system. Filed on behalf of nine students from four families Monday, the ACLU says the school system has a pattern of promotion and endorsement of religious activities that is unconstitutional. They gave examples: the distribution of Bibles into schools by Gideon's International, invocations at school board meetings, prayer over the speakers, teacher endorsement of religion, graduation ceremonies and other school events held at churches and youth ministers proselytizing on campus. A local pastor there said the Establishment Clause promises freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. He said "ultimately, those who oppose God will be defeated.
