Survey: Eight Percent Of Americans Drive Drunk
08.26.10 |
(Washington, DC) -- Startling new numbers show as many as 17-million people drove drunk on U.S. roads at least once in the past year. A survey by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that in the past year about one in five Americans drove within two hours of drinking alcohol. The report also noted, those who said they drink and drive consumed alcohol more often than those who don't drink and drive. Around a third of all deadly wrecks in the U.S. involve a drunk driver.
The new data was released in conjunction with the Transportation Department's annual kickoff of the "Drunk Driving. Over The Limit. Under Arrest." campaign. The crackdown will run through the Labor Day weekend to help keep drunk drivers off the roads.
