Strong wind topples several trees in Gates

Trees were no match for whipping winds after a severe storm hit the Rochester area on Monday.

In Gates, Betty Duval-Rutley was in her den when a tree snapped and crashing onto some power lines behind her home on Tarwood Drive.

Across the street, winds toppled a massive tree onto a pickup truck and a garage behind it. Luckily, the homeowner was out of town at the time.

“It’s very frightening, something like I’ve never seen or heard before,” Duval-Rutley said.

A large limb also snapped onto Duval-Rutley’s front yard. Her daughter, Joanne Jordan, saw what was happening on Tarwood Drive on the news and thought her mother was hurt.

“It was something like a tornado,” Jordan said. “The wind was blowing; it was raining really hard. It was just awful.”

Lisa Pennello was cooking when she looked out the window to find remnants of trees flying everywhere.

“It flew over my kitchen window,” Pennello said. “I was cooking. It flew up like a bat out of hell.”

Fire and clean-up crews responded to the scene within minutes.

“It’s something you don’t want to hear and something you don’t want to be in,” Pennello said.

No one was hurt but without power, some neighbors aren’t taking any chances. A few will be staying with relatives until power is restored.

“What are you going to do,” Pennello said. “This is God’s way of telling us to cut it out down here.”
