Somali Pirate From Maersk Attack to Appear in NY Court

The lone surviving pirate who helped take an American cargo ship captain prisoner two weeks ago off the coast of Somalia arrived in New York City on Monday ahead of a scheduled court appearance later today. A handcuffed Abduhl Wali-i-Musi smiled for the horde of photographers waiting outside a Big Apple federal building to see him taken into custody by federal agents.

The Somali teen could be seen wearing a bandage on his left hand, presumably for injuries he sustained when he and three other bandits attempted to hijack the U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama on April 8th. Wali-i-Musi is expected to stand trial on federal charges related to piracy and hostage-taking.

The pirates were repelled by the crew and took off in a lifeboat with Captain Richard Phillips as a hostage. Wali-i-Musi was captured by the U.S. Navy shortly before Navy SEAL snipers killed the other three pirates to free Captain Phillips after a four-day standoff on the high seas.
