Wedged between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Town Business Saturday. It's designed to steer holiday shoppers toward mom and pop shops. American Express founded the event in 2010 to drive shoppers to smaller stores, and now it takes place in all 50 states, including New York and Pennsylvania. In fact, 100 million shoppers participated last year. Lisa Curatolo, owner of the Goat Boy gift shop in Owego, said her sales go up by 40 percent during the holiday season, and it's made steadier with the local shop weekend.
