Scottish Authorities Defend Doctor In Lockerbie Case

(Washington, DC) -- Scottish authorities are defending the doctor who said Lockerbie bomber Abdel Basset al-Megrahi had three months to live. The defense came after New Jersey Senators Robert Menendez and Frank Lautenberg and New York Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand signed a letter to the Scottish government, asking them to release the Libyan's medical records. The senators are probing the circumstances surrounding Megrahi's release last August.
The Lockerbie bomber is still alive one year after Scottish authorities freed him on compassionate grounds. A medical report compiled by Andrew Fraser, the Scottish Prison Service's director of health and care, said Megrahi had terminal prostate cancer and could die in three months. He was convicted of the 1988 bombing of an Pan Am jumbo jet airliner over Lockerbie, Scotland that killed 270 people, mostly Americans. Megrahi's release sparked anger among the families of those who died in the bombing.
