Scamming cancer charities are shut down after lawsuit

A multistate civil lawsuit filed against a group of family members who claimed to raise money for cancer victims has been settled, resulting in the closing of two charities.

New York's Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said Cancer Fund of America, Inc. and Cancer Support Services, Inc. claimed to help cancer patients, but instead benefited bogus charity operators and fundraisers.

Jim Reynolds is now banned from charity fundraising and non-profit work.

A joint federal-state complaint targeted four charities run by Reynolds and his family members that allegedly swindled more than 187 million dollars from U.S.donors -- including nearly 3 million dollars from New York residents since 2008.
