Same-Sex Marriage Advocates in NY Unhappy With California Decision
05.27.09 |
Homosexual rights activists in New York are expressing disappointment in the California Supreme Court's decision to uphold Proposition 8. That is the initiative approved by Golden State voters to legally define marriage as only between a man and a woman.
Empire State Pride Agenda Executive Director Alan Van Capelle calls it "a missed opportunity" to do what courts "are supposed to do," which he says is to ensure all people are treated equally under the law. However, Van Capelle agreed with the court's decision not to dissolve the 18-thousand gay marriages that occurred before Proposition 8 was passed.
Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets in New York City, marching from Greenwich Village to Union Square to denounce the ruling. The protesters briefly rallied in Sheridan Square, near the site of the Stonewall riots that spurred the gay rights movement 40-years ago.
A new Sienna College poll shows a drop in support for legalizing gay marriage in New York. The survey shows New Yorkers are split on the issue at 46-percent, down seven-percent from a month ago.
For more on Proposition 8, listen tomorrow during the Noon Report. FLN's Ed Thomas will speak with California Pastor Dr. Jim Garlow of the Skyline Wesleyan Church, which has been a vocal leader among the suppoters of the Prop 8 campaign.
