Run-off In Disputed Afghan Election Set For Next Month
10.20.09 |
Afghans will have to head back to the polls next month. This, after election authorities announced that a second round run-off will be held in November to finally resolve the war-torn country's disputed August presidential election. Incumbent President Hamid Karzai must now face off against challenger Abdullah Abdullah after a U.N.-backed watchdog threw out tens of thousands of votes for Karzai. Karzai called the election commission's decision, quote, "legitimate, legal and constitutional." Confirmation of the run-off comes amid
Defense Secretary Robert Gates' warning that a decision on whether to send more U.S. troops to Afghanistan can't be put off much longer.
