Report: Unemployment Running Out For More Than a Million
08.03.09 |
(New York, NY) -- As many as a 1.5-million unemployed workers will reportedly be coming to an end of their jobless benefits by the end of the year. "The New York Times" cites the National Employment Law Project in reporting half a million people will have used up their payments by the end of September.
A National Employment Law Project policy director says without an extension, "a huge wave of workers will start running out of their critical extended benefits."
Some are calling for another extension of benefits. Democrat Jim McDermott of Washington is promising to introduce such an measure this fall in the U.S. House. The chairman of the House Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support plans to craft legislation that would provide another 13 weeks of coverage in states with unemployment rates of nine percent or higher.
