Report Shows Student Gains In Math, Reading

A new report shows gains in math and reading scores in public schools among both black and white students in 2007. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) finds fourth and eighth graders in both races performed higher in math during that year than in any assessment dating back to 1990. In the area of reading, black and white eighth graders had higher scores in 2007 than in the first year of the NAEP assessment in 1992.
On average in all assessments, white students' scores were higher than those of black pupils. In each subject, white students had average scores at least 26 points above those of black students. The NAEP 2007 Reading and Mathematics Assessment was conducted nationally and included fourth and eighth graders.
