Record Bear Kills in NY State

The State Department of Environmental Conservation says most of the bear kills came in the Catskills. Commissioner Joe Martin says New York has an ideal bear habitat and vast accessible public lands that offer ideal hunting conditions. The Southern Tier had a near-record kill rate of 342 bears last season. An abundance of acorns and nuts kept bears feeding later into the fall, which also accounted for the larger kill rate. Experts say the increase in hunted bears is good, as the population has been the rise in recent years.
