"Read Across America" Celebrates Books, Honors Seuss
03.02.09 |
Today is Dr. Seuss' birthday. You can celebrate by eating a helping of green eggs and ham, or try something a little easier to stomach. There is this advice from him: "You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child."
First Lady Michelle Obama will be doing her part at a ceremony at the Library of Congress today. She will be kicking off Read Across America Day, an annual event sponsored by the National Education Association in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday.
The First Lady will be joined by students and Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Librarian of Congress David Billington. The idea is to bring kids and books together, even if it's just for the time it takes to re-read Seuss' "The Cat in the Hat." Dr. Seuss wrote more than 60 children's books.
