President: "I'm A Christian By Choice"
09.29.10 |
(Albuquerque, NM) -- President Obama was questioned about his religion Tuesday at a political event in New Mexico. He said his family didn't go to church every week when he was growing up, but said he is now "a Christian by choice." The President went on to explain that although his mother was, in his words, "one of the most spiritual people I knew," she didn't raise him in any particular religion.
He added, "I came to my Christian faith later in life." He said "the precepts of Jesus Christ" spoke to him in the terms of the kind of life he wants to lead as a public servant. Obama emphasized his belief in religious tolerance as guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution. Polls show a large number of Americans, mostly Republicans, believe Mr. Obama is a Muslim.
