Presbyterian Church OK's Gay Ministers
07.11.11 |
One of the largest Christian denominations in America started allowing gay men and women openly involved in same-sex marriages to become ministers on Sunday. The Presbyterian Church voted May 10th to allow the ordination of gays as ministers, elders, and deacons. The vote was close -- 97 of the denomination's 173 presbyteries approved it. The move represents a major change in the history of the 2.8 million-member Presbyterian denomination. The new policy changes the actual language in the church constitution. More than 100 of the 11,000 Presbyterian churches in the United States have already left the denomination over the issue.
