Pennsylvania's Population Is Getting Older

The 2010 Census proves that Pennsylvania is showing its age. The figures are being released for the first time today, and they show the median age of residents has inched past 40, as the first baby boomers approach retirement age. It means the state is tied for 5th place for having the oldest people in the nation. Counties in rural northern Pennsylvania, as well as areas in western parts of the state once teeming with steel mills and coal mines were among the oldest in the commonwealth. Plus, the percentage of Pennsylvania homes with children dipped to 29, down from 32 percent in 2000. Experts say it impacts everything from housing to transportation to child care-- to how many people are enrolling in Pennsylvania colleges.
