Parts Of Texas Pro-Life Law Shot Down By Federal Judge

A judge in Austin Tuesday struck down key provisions of a Texas law that would require a physician to perform an ultrasound before an abortion. The law was set to take effect on Thursday. The federal judge said it violates basic American free speech rights. He also struck down a requirement that allows women to avoid seeing the sonogram image only if they sign a statement saying they are pregnant because of sexual assault or incest. He said the state can't require a woman to disclose private information. A new york reproductive rights group had sued to block the law from taking effect. The state plans to appeal the ruling. Texas Governor Rick Perry said yesterday every life lost to abortion is a tragedy. He said "the ruling is a great disappointment to all Texans who stand in defense of life."
